About the Instructor

Aretha Knight began studying martial arts at an early age. She was introduced to boxing by her father as a means of self-protection. She later began studying Taekwondo at the age of 13. During this time Aretha participated in and won several Karate tournaments. She temporarily stopped her martial arts training in order to attend college and participate in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball program at Drexel University.

After college, Aretha began studying Thãt Són Võ Ðao, "The Seven Mountains way of Spiritual Martial Art." A system founded in North America by Master Phuoc Phan. This ancient art was shaped in China by the Esoteric Taoists. It spread through Burma, where it was influenced by the Mystic Buddhist School of Spiritual Martial Art, and through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and over the Seven Mountains into Vietnam. To promote the Thãt Són Võ Ðao system in the Western world Master Phan began a campaign of martial arts tournament appearances, winning many national championships and several world championships including the National Black Belt (NBL) 1992, 1993 and 1996 World Championships.

Aretha is currently studying Chen style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) under Michael Rosario-Graycar, the creator of the PSS, at the Phoenix Martial Arts Center in Norristown, PA where she also teach taiji. The Chen family style is the oldest and parent form of the five traditional family styles. Chen style is characterized by Silk reeling (chan si jin), alternating fast/slow motion and bursts of power (fa jin). It is mainly practiced for health, external/internal martial art skills, aesthetics and/or meditation. Michael is a disciple of Master Ren Guang-Yi, whom he continues to train with privately. Michael also trains privately with Grandmaster Chen, Xiaowang, Grandmaster Chen, Xiaoxing and Master Chen, Bing. Michael is committed to teaching traditional internal martial arts.

Aretha also studies Jiu-Jitsu. She trains under Michael Rosario-Graycar (Gracie Combatives Program) and Alexandre Britto (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Alexandre Britto is the head instructor at the Alliance PA Martial Arts Center in West Chester. He was certified by Master Romero "Jacare" Cavalcante and Fabio Gurgel.

Aretha has participated in and won many Karate, Kungfu, and Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. She is dedicated to improving her martial skills. Her goal is to educate and teach others to protect themselves from senseless crimes and abuse.
