Pushing Hands

Taiji Pushing Hands (tuishou) is a cooperative two person exercise that helps in developing listening (ting), understanding (dong), neutralizing (hua) and issuing (fa). The study of push hands teaches students to respond to external stimuli using techniques from their forms practice. Among other things, training with a partner allows a student to develop listening power, the sensitivity to feel the direction and strength of a partner's intention. Students train in the defensive and offensive movement principles of their martial art: learning to generate, coordinate and deliver power to another and also how to effectively neutralize incoming forces in a safe environment. In addition, push hands helps in the physical understanding of the 13 postures of taiji (Eight Gates and Five Steps). The 13 postures are the foundation of taijiquan. The first 8 postures refer to energetic expressions with physical applications and the last 5 postures are directions and movements.

8 Principles of Movement (first 4 are primary principles):

  1. Ward off (Peng)
  2. Roll back (Lu)
  3. Press forward (Ji)
  4. Press downward (An)
  5. Pluck (tsai)
  6. Split (Lieh)
  7. Elbow (Zhou)
  8. Shoulder (Kao)

The Five Steps:

  1. Forward step (Jin)
  2. Backward step (Tui)
  3. Left step (Ku)
  4. Right step (Pan)
  5. Settling at the center (Ding)

Push Hands usually begins in a one-handed fixed-foot position, progresses to two-handed, fixed-foot posture, two-handed moving routines, and finally to a free form practice. Beginners start off with gentle pre-arranged forms of push hands then gradually moving to sophisticated patterns while slowing increasing the amount of force applied and received as their skills develops. While more advanced students/practitioners begin working on joint locks (chinna) and throws (shuaijiao). Through the practice of taiji pushing hands one improves these abilities while in physical contact with another person. To be balanced and relaxed while in contact with another person who is moving is a difficult task. Attainment of this ability opens the door to mastery of martial skill through taijiquan.
